How to Join Performance Rights Organization (PRO)?

Joining a Performance Rights Organization (PRO) is a necessary step for any musician or songwriter who wants to earn royalties for their music. Here are the steps to joining a PRO:

  1. Research the different PROs: There are several PROs to choose from, including ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. Each PRO has different requirements, fees, and benefits, so research the options and choose the one that best fits your needs.
  2. Gather required documentation: Each PRO has different requirements, but generally, you will need to provide proof of your identity, proof of authorship of your music, and a tax ID number.
  3. Submit your application: Fill out the application form and submit it along with the required documentation and the application fee (if required) to the PRO of your choice.
  4. Wait for approval: Once your application has been received, it will be reviewed by the PRO. If it is approved, you will be notified and sent a membership agreement to sign.
  5. Begin reporting your performances: Once you have become a member of a PRO, you will need to begin reporting your performances so that you can be paid royalties. This is usually done through a web portal or through a mobile app.
  6. Get paid: Once you have reported your performances, the PRO will collect royalties from the venues and pay you accordingly.

Note that the process might vary from PRO to PRO, but it is a good idea to check the website of the PRO you are interested in for more detailed information.

There are other PROs around the world, and these are only a few examples.
